"What is Black Balloon Day?
On March 6, families and loved ones across the United States come together for Black Balloon Day to honor those lost to overdose.
While overdose deaths have recently declined, drug overdose remains the leading cause of accidental death in the U.S. Black Balloon Day is a time to remember, raise awareness for harm prevention, and support those impacted by substance use disorder. Sharing our stories and bringing the community together through shared experiences helps break the stigma and drive real change.
When Did Black Ballon Day Start?
As with many things from the opioid epidemic, Black Balloon Day began with a family’s loss. Diane and Lauren Hurley began Black Balloon Day in remembrance of Greg Tremblay. Tremblay, a father of four, is the son-in-law of Diane and brother-in-law of Lauren and died of an overdose when he was 38 years old on March 6, 2015."
