Reform the Organ Donor System Traditional methods of treatment have failed these individuals, and now the drug that has kept them alive could keep them from getting a life saving procedure.

Transplant criteria at local hospitals and insurance companies creates a no-win situation for seriously ill patients who are prescribed legal medical marijuana by their doctors. The transplant criteria assumes that if marijuana is found in your system, then you are a ‘substance abuser’, a category of people for who transplant success is less likely. “There is no way to differentiate between a rec

reational marijuana user and a medicinal marijuana user, simply because there are no physiological differences,” states Dr. Timothy Connoley of the Rhode Island Pain management Centers. Because you are treated as if transplant success is less likely with past THC use, you are either denied an organ transplant, or required to test clean of marijuana for up to six months before you can even get on the list. This process of testing and retesting patients adds precious time to the already tedious process of actually getting on the transplant list, a wait that could already last up to 6 years according to The United Network of Organ Sharing, or UNOS, December 21 2011.
