Over the past few years, CES has become one giant A/V club for the folks at Sony. The show has essentially turned into a showcase for the hardware giant’s high-res TVs, headphones and speakers. And this year’s no different. Sony is launching a metric ton of speakers this year, including the SRS-XB40, SRS-XB30, SRS-XB20 and SRS-XB10 (never change with those naming conventions,… Read More

01/05/2017

ZTE Blade Pro V8 is the Chinese phone maker's budget phone that steals away flagship smartphone features while maintaining an incredibly cheaper price.

It's an Android phone with a dual camera system, a fingerprint sensor and a big battery that competes with some of the best cheap phones in the UK and US.

The biggest surprise to us at CES 2017 was that the feature-filled Blade phone series is finally coming to the US. ZTE is trying to make a name for itself as the current No. 2 'no contract' phone maker.

While it doesn't go as far as using a top-of-the-line Snapdragon chip, pushing the its 1080p display to the limit or running the latest version of Android, everything that's here is a bargain for thrifty shoppers.

Price and release date

The ZTE Blade V8 Pro is appropriately coming to the US 'full throttle' with pre-orders kicking off today in the midst of CES 2017. You can find it at retailers like NewEgg, B&H Photo and ZTE's official website.

The best part is that it only costs $229 in the US (which is roughly 186 in the UK and 314 in Australia). That's much cheaper than phones that normally tout features like a dual-lens camera on back.

Design and dispaly

ZTE Blade V8 Pro is a likable-looking inexpensive phone – one that's all budget on the front and party on the texturized back.

It measures 156 x 77 x 9.1mm, which means it isn't the slimmest smartphone, but it's easy enough to hold with one hand and fit in your skinny jeans pocket.

The 5.5-inch Full HD display gives you a 1080p resolution that's perfectly fine for everyday use, but don't expect it to ever be suitable for a VR close-up. Often times, Quad HD screens look pixelated as it is.

The screen is protected by Gorilla Glass 3, while a fingerprint sensor on the other side protects your phone from strangers with a biometric entry to the lockscreen and Android Pay.

Caution. This is a GSM-only phone – meaning in the US it won't work on Verizon or Sprint – but it does include a dual SIM card tray that can otherwise be used for a microSD card slot. That's great for overseas use.

Dual lens camera and battery life

The big highlight here is the fact that there's a dual lens camera on the back of the ZTE Blade V8 Pro, even at its incredibly cheap price point.

It consists of two 13MP cameras that combine vibrant color and high contrast black-and-white photos into a superior master image.

While we need to get more time with the Blade V8 Pro to test out the quality, we were able to fiddle around with the camera app and edit some photos, including a black-and-white sketch mode.

You get a healthy battery size here, with a 3140mAh capacity that easily tops other budget phones in the same price range that haven't broken the 3,000mAh ceiling yet.

However, the charging standard is now two generations behind, with Qualcomm QuickCharge 2.0 faster charging things at speeds we first saw in 2014.

Specs and Software

ZTE Blade V8 Pro contains a fast enough Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 chipset, but it's by no means the fastest processor out there.

This won't be a problem for most people on a budget. Just don't buy into this phone expecting the brand new Snapdragon 821 on the Google Pixel and Google Pixel XL or its Snapdragon 835 sequel that's about to tear up 2017.

The phone is also running Android Marshmallow, which isn't the latest version of Google's operating system. However, it could get Android 7.0 Nougat in the future, we're told.

Early verdict

ZTE Blade V8 Pro has a lot of the features we've liked about flagship phones, and it offers them at a much cheaper price.

You won't get every major feature of top Android phones, but there's definitely a bang for your buck here. If you've been envy of dual-lens cameras and fingerprint sensors, this is one to consider.

One of the biggest and most biting criticism of modern tech is the industry’s excessive push to solve trivial problems. Nowhere is this theme more apparent than among the sea of forgettable gadgets at CES, itself a trade show that revels in the opulence of Las Vegas and the often hollow promise of our techno-enabled future. Occasionally, there is a device that breaks the mold. Leka, a smart toy from a French startup of the same name, is a tiny spherical robot not unlike Star Wars’ BB-8. Instead of dazzling us with cheap tricks, Leka has a purpose: to help children with autism and other developmental disabilities better learn and communicate with others.

The device, shown off yesterday at CES, is aimed at schools and therapy institutions...

Following months of leaks, Samsung is today making its latest Chromebook official. The new computer is actually two models — the Chromebook Plus and Chromebook Pro — and is the first one built from the ground up with support for Android apps. It’s also the first Chromebook to come with a stylus and support on-screen inking. The Chromebook Plus will be available starting this February for $449; the virtually-identical-save-for-a-different-processor Chromebook Pro will arrive later this year for a to-be-determined-but-definitely-higher price.

Google and Samsung collaborated on the new device, which features a 12.3-inch, 2400 x 1600 pixel LED display; 4GB of RAM; two USB Type-C ports, which support charging and 4K video output; a MicroSD...

01/05/2017

Over the years we’ve seen Chrome OS and Android steadily merge and now the union seems to have finally culminated in the Samsung Chromebook Pro.

It’s part Chromebook and part Android device with a 360-degree convertible laptop design and 12.3-inch 3:2 screen reminiscent of tablets. What’s more, the Pro debuts stylus support on Chrome OS for the first time ever.

Weighing in at a scant 1.08Kg (2.38lbs), this all metal Chromebook is one of the lightest laptops we’ve ever used. The design centers around rounded edges and a soft metal similar to the recently updated Samsung Notebook 9 and the Samsung Galaxy TabPro S before it.

Now unlike many of Samsung’s other laptops, the Pro features a 3:2 display that you would more normally see on tablets. The increase in vertical pixels makes it easier to read webpages at a glance and view photos in fullscreen. However, streaming media and movies will letterbox heavily.

No matter what type of media you consume on this Chromebook, it’ll look amazing. Samsung sticks to its tradition of including gorgeous displays on its devices and here we have a 12.3-inch QHD 2,400 x 1,600 resolution display. On top of being sharp, the display renders colors pop that with vivid richness without being overly saturated.

The Samsung Chromebook Pro will also be capable of streaming 4K media thanks to its Intel Core m3-6Y30 processor (0.90 GHz up to 2.20 GHz) and 4GB of onboard memory.

Additionally, Samsung is introducing all new ways to use a touchscreen on Chrome OS by integrating a built-in stylus. With the added digitizer you can finally write down notes and save them automatically to Google Keep. From there, Google can then convert your handwriting (or our personal chicken scatch) into digital documents and reminders.

Fold back that display and the Samsung Chromebook Pro felt as natural as using any Android tablet whether we were adding songs to our Spotify playlist or slinging an avian arsenal in Angry Birds Blast!

Samsung calls the the Chromebook Pro a new class of device with the Play Store in mind and we can’t wait to use ever Android app on a Chromebook.

Early verdict

The Samsung Chromebook Pro breaks new ground for Chrome OS with a built-in stylus and paired with Google Keep, it could be the best tablet-laptop for managing our lives. Aside from the unique built-in pen, this is one of the best built Chromebooks yet with a high-res screen designed to consume media on the web.

Samsung has yet to announce pricing, but the South Korean electronics firm has promised it will be more affordable than past premium devices like the Dell Chromebook 13 and HP Chromebook 13. Additionally, Samsung is making its convertible Chromebook accessible with a more affordable $449 (about £360, AU$620) Plus model that will feature ARM processor.
