What decisions that you made were life changing? For me, #1, is when I made the decision to get sober 9 years ago. In 2022, the life changing decision was to stand up for myself and go for what I knew I deserved.

Did anything unexpected happen in 2022? Did it lead to the unbelievable? For me, when something used to be completely unexpected, I resisted. I hated surprise. I hated change. Over the last few years, this has shifted a bit. I am more open to the possibilities that the unexpected brings...a new outlook, a new horizon that didn't exist. The unexpected cam be scary, but can also be hugely rewarding!

When I think of comfort, I think of a cozy blanket, a warm cup of tea, and a good book. Nothing works better when I am feeling down, worn out, or anxious. I don't get to spend as much time as I would like in this comfort state, but I try to enjoy at least once a week. What does comfort look like for you?

2022 has been an absolutely amazing year! Even the vest year has a challenge. In 2022 I got a promotion at an organization that I absolutely cherish. I went to school full time working toward my Ph.D. in Mind Body Medicine. My son is thriving and my amazing husband took on a new career. Through all of the amazingness, I still challenge to put myself first, to slow down, to breath. I'm always doing my thing, pushing for perfection (which I know recognize as a coping mechanism), and go full speed ahead. As a result, I go places and I do big things. BUT I need to stop, and take my sanity, self care, and mental state into consideration. This December I'm doing just that! What about you, what was your biggest challenge of 2022?

If you were an animal, what would you be? I would choose my favorite animal, the strong but gentle turtle. I love laying in the sun all day and playing in the water, I wouldn't mind the slow pace of life.

Book Recommendation! Highly recommend!

Let’s talk about the lie that fat bodies are inherently unhealthy.

The whole, complex and nuanced truth is: fat bodies can be unhealthy or healthy. Thin bodies will be unhealthy or healthy.

In our current society, however, we will blame poor health on fatness, and good health as a result of thinness.

This is called weight stigma.

Janet Tomiyama’s research showed the uselessness of BMI in determining health status. BMI as a diagnostic tool dramatically over-diagnosed fat people as unhealthy and under-diagnosed thin people as unhealthy. Clearly, using BMI helps no one at the doctor's office.

Fat bodies are often under attack from childhood. Chronic food restriction, over-exercising, weight cycling and the effects of weight stigma are harmful to health. Studies that correlate illness with fatness rarely consider the effects of chronic dieting and weight stigma. These are confounding factors.

And we now know that behaviors (such as exercise) -- more than size -- have a greater impact on health. The evidence is clear on this. That means eating well and fitness and taking care of the various other parts of life can support our health. Many people can do this. Many can’t. As always, health is not a measure of anybody’s worthiness.

Let's remember: Health is complicated and means different things to different people and is not always 100% within our control.

Ignore the lies of diet culture that tell you fatness is inherently unhealthy that may lead you to do worse things for your health (like dieting). Do your best with doing healthy things (which do not include restriction) and leave the rest -- like size and shape -- up to your personal biology.

I am usually great at asking myself what I need in the moment. The answer varies...love, support, quiet, rest, breath. The hard part is taking action and following through with the answer.

Beginning to ask yourself what you need is a great first step to awareness in the moment, but as you get better at being aware that you need something....make sure you follow through.

Like learning to build trust in our bodies by paying attention to hunger and fullness cues and responding, we need to build trust that we will listen to all cues sent by the body.

This isn't easy, so don't forget your self compassion work.
