Feeling frustrated? Maybe you have tried IE in the past and gave up when you saw the number on the scale climb. Or, maybe you are a newbie to IE and wondering if your weight will just keep going up and up and up! You may feel MORE uncomfortable, especially if you are in a marginalized body, and/or are in recovery for an eating disorder.
A very common result of learning to eat intuitively is weight gain.
Because we have internalized the idea that health and wellness can only measured by body shape and size, weight gain in the initial stages of IE, can often cause clients to falter, and start itching to go back to dieting. But, I'd like to challenge you: Instead of blaming IE or scapegoating your body... try widening the lens. 🎥
Is it possible you were at a weight that was only achievable by restricting prior to starting IE? What ELSE is playing into the current picture of your multi-faceted life? (relationships, work, finances, aging, etc)
You could attempt a sense of control by falling back into diet culture, but I think you know what that looks like, (sorry, not sorry).
The good news? Since diet & exercise only account for about 15% of your health outcomes, why not focus on the bigger picture?
In the absence of body size, what does your wellbeing look like? What aspects of health, (sexual, social, emotional, sleep, etc) have nothing to do with your weight?
If food and body image feel like they take up too much of your precious time, mental space, and energy, it's time to seek support.
