DATA RELEASE: COMPLEX FULL THICKNESS TRAUMATIC WOUNDS

A study presented by Dr. Jonathan Saxe, Vice Chair of Surgery, Ascension St. Vincent Medical Center and Medical Director, Altrazeal Life Sciences Inc., at the Medical Technology Enterprise Consortium (MTEC) Annual Membership Meeting evaluated how Altrazeal helped treat 10 patients with complex, full thickness traumatic wounds with elements of exposed bones, tendons and muscles. A marked acceleration in healing with reduced frequency of dressing changes relative to the standard of care was achieved in all 10 cases.

DATA RELEASE | RETROSPECTIVE DESCRIPTIVE ANALYSIS OF ALTRAZEAL IN 70 PATIENTS WITH HARD-TO-HEAL WOUNDS

Atypical, hard to heal wounds comprising about 20% of all chronic wounds, are challenging to diagnose, and fail to heal within 4-8 weeks despite standard of care (SOC) treatment plans. Currently, high quality evidence for optimal treatment of these wounds is sparse, and SOC treatments are often ineffective. Chronic wounds impose a significant clinical, financial, and social burden to the individual, the healthcare system and the society at large.

A case series led by University of Hamburg Medical Center in Germany evaluated Altrazeal’s impact on wound healing for 70 patients with hard-to-heal wounds (average duration 19.1 months) that failed SOC treatment.

- Extended 30-day wear time without primary dressing changes was observed in 66% patients (46 wounds).
- 37 of 70 patients (53%) healed as compared to 8% for SOC, based on the European Wound Registry (EWR) cohort over the 14-week study period.
- Treatment goals for 71% (50 patients) were achieved.

ALTRAZEAL PREVENTS AMPUTATION TO SEND AN EGYPTIAN FISHERMAN BACK TO SEA

Altrazeal was used by Dr. Mounir Mabrouk (Chief of Vascular Surgery at طلاب جامعة الاسكندرية- Alexandria University in Egypt and Fellow from The Mount Sinai Hospital in New York) to treat a 42-year-old patient suffering from a painful, progressive venous ulcer with uncontrolled vasculitis and exposed bone. RETROSPECTIVE CASE SERIES: TREATMENT OF 50 ACUTE AND CHRONIC WOUNDS OF MULTIPLE WOUND ETIOLOGIES

In an institutional review board-approved single-centre retrospective case series, the researchers evaluated 50 acute and chronic wounds treated with Altrazeal. Over the 40-day study period, 72% of patients experienced wound healing (≥10% reduction in wound area per week), and 54% of patients had complete wound closure. After treatment with Altrazeal, nearly all wounds, regardless of etiology, location, or chronicity, demonstrated complete wound healing or a reduction in wound surface area with no adverse effects.

DATA RELEASE: ALTRAZEAL IN SICKLE CELL ASSOCIATED WOUNDS

Sickle cell associated wounds are notoriously difficult to heal as the treatment involves various challenges including pain, inflammation, chronicity and vascular insufficiency. At the Symposium on Advanced Wound Care (SAWC) Spring 2023 Meeting, Alisha Oropallo, MD and Amit Rao, MD from Northwell Health presented a case series illustrating the use of Altrazeal in sickle cell ulcers.

The study concluded that the implementation of Altrazeal showed significant improvement in the healing trajectory for both patients within a short period of time. The patients also reported reduced pain post-treatment.

Carolyn Cintron, BSN, RN, CWOCN, and Theresa Pineda, BSN, RN, CWOCN, share their experience with Altrazeal in treating a 40-year-old patient with a complex abdominal wound. The patient was undergoing treatment with negative pressure wound therapy, but developed multiple fistula formations. Upon transition to Altrazeal, his bleeding stopped and wound size decreased with an improved pouching surface, leading to a successful fistula takedown surgery followed by full wound closure.
