An estrogen imbalance often results in symptoms of both high and low estrogen. It is possible to simultaneously experience both.
Excess estrogen symptoms may include:
◾Bloating, puffiness, or water retention
◾Heavy bleeding or postmenopausal bleeding
◾Rapid weight gain, particularly in the hips and butt
◾Increased bra-cup size or breast tenderness
◾Fibroids or endometriosis, or painful periods
◾Mood swings, PMS, depression, weepiness, irritability, anxiety
◾A red flush on your face (or a diagnosis of rosacea)
Low estrogen symptoms include:
◾Poor memory
◾Emotional fragility
◾Depression, perhaps with anxiety or lethargy
◾Wrinkles
◾Night sweats or hot flashes
◾Trouble sleeping, waking up in the middle of the night
◾Droopy breasts, or breasts lessening in volume
◾Achy joints
◾Bone loss
◾Vaginal dryness, irritation, or loss of feeling
◾Lack of juiciness elsewhere (dry eyes, dry skin, dry cl****is)
◾Low libido
👉Symptoms of estrogen excess are relative to progesterone, but symptoms of low estrogen are simply relative to your own personal baseline.
So you can have low estrogen, but relative to a low level of progesterone, you may still have symptoms of excess estrogen.
It is much more common to have high estrogen than low estrogen, and many of the symptoms are difficult to differentiate. Excess estrogen suppresses your thyroid activity, which can lead to signs of low thyroid like fatigue, symptoms that are confusingly similar to the symptoms of low estrogen. Too much estrogen can also reduce the quality or frequency of or***ms, and because it lowers your testosterone levels, it also diminishes your s*x drive.
You can test to find out whether you are you’re high or low in estrogen. You can also take my Hormone Questionnaire in THE HORMONE CURE (pages 24-35).
Hops in herbal form (not beer, of course😀) can address symptoms of both low and high estrogen at a dose of 100 mg daily.
I’ll share some strategies and supplements for low estrogen next.
